Although the much-adored Los Angeles indie-rock quartet Rilo Kiley remains very much intact and bigger than ever, for that matter theres just no getting around the fact that founding member Jenny Lewis is well on her way to breakout stardom. Her first solo album, 2006s beguiling Rabbit Fur Coat (co-credited to the Watson Twins) was something of a sleeper hit warmly received but too subtle in its sweet, folksy graces to be mistaken for a take-no-prisoners, Gwen-Stefani-style bid for the mainstream. But upon her return to Rilo Kiley for 2007s Under the Blacklight (the bands major-label debut), Lewis was clearly the member most directly under the spotlight a dramatic shift in the bands direction resulting in arguably their most adventurous and satisfying album to date. As The Onions A.V. Club observed, it almost feels like the band was just using its first three albums to warm up. And that goes double for Lewis herself, who will follow-up Rilo Kileys 2008 summer tour with her second solo outing.
