Fortunately for Jakob Dylan, by the time he hit the scene with his first band, the Wallflowers, in the early 90s, new Dylan references were already so overused, he merely had to endure notations of the obvious: He really was the next Dylan. He probably had to suffer through some lame comparisons, but anyone who listened with even half an ear could discern a simple truth: Jakob may look like a younger version of His Bobness (except with piercing blue eyes), but the son is decidedly not a chip off the old block. He sings better, for one thing. A lot better. With the Wallflowers, he also built a poppier roots-rock sound (6th Avenue Heartache, One Headlight) than Dad ever had. But with his debut solo album, Seeing Things, theres just no point in trying to add or subtract similarities. Jakob simply does what he does, quite well, in fact. The Rick Rubin-produced affair leans toward Dylans acoustic singer-songwriter side, though wed hesitate to use the word folk; were hardly talkin Blowin in the Wind here. Dylan, whos nearing 40, examines the positive and negative aspects of life in tunes like the almost Jayhawks-reminiscent Something Good This Way Comes and the more sinister Evil is Alive and Well.  Were looking forward to hearing what else he has to say and sing.
