The Rosebuds are Ivan Howard and Kelly Crisp from Eastern North Carolina. For the last couple of years, however, they’ve been living on opposite coasts—Kelly has been in New York City, and Ivan has been in Portland, Oregon. They’ve spent that time reframing: Kelly started graduate school for Fiction Writing at Columbia University, and Ivan made a solo album for Spacebomb Records under the name Howard Ivans, and toured the country. These two were determined to concentrate the focus of their separate experiences into their shared art project, so in the spring of 2013, they went into April Base Studio in Eau Claire, Wisconsin with their friend and former bandmate, Justin Vernon.
Their comfort and connection with Vernon allowed them to experiment with form and content, as Vernon gently teased out the band's most stellar musical performances to date. Recorded in one week, with the addition of Matt McCaughan (Bon Iver), Vernon on guitar and synths, Nick Sanborn (Sylvan Esso) on bass, and BJ Burton engineering, co-producing and mixing the album, The Rosebuds were able to quickly find the dynamics and textures they wanted. Recorded mostly live in the same room together, observing the general rule to always use the first or second take, the songs feel punchier, more confident, and more hook-laden than anything the band has produced before.
The fresh creative synergy of SAND + SILENCE heralds the beginning of a new story for The Rosebuds. The band’s honesty and passion filtered through their refined songwriting skill makes this new album feel alive, positive, ringing with possibility. Spring is here again, and the album is SAND + SILENCE.
