Every week we will be showcasing installments from a special artist discovery series for bands playing the Austin City Limits Music Festival this October from local websites hand-picked by the ACL Festival faithful. This installment comes from ACL Mike
featuring Amos Lee
I first saw Amos Lee indoors at Stubbs BBQ in 2005. The place was wall to wall and I believe everyone there left truly impressed. He plays with an effortless attitude and maintains an amazing stage presence at the same time. I also caught Amos at ACL Fest 2007 where he was greatly received and played unforgettable set leaving the audience wanting more. That same year he taped an acclaimed live performance for the Austin City Limits television show.
Amos Lee was born in Philadelphia, PA in 1978. His musical style is a seamless blend of folk, jazz, blues and soul. I always describe him as a combination of Bob Dylan and Al Green. Amos was picked up by Blue Note Records in 2005 and has released three albums under them, including several live ones. His self-titled debut release in 2005 saw great success and he was named as one of Rolling Stone’s “Top 10 Artists to Watch.” This album also gained attention and acclaim from appearances of his songs on several television programs including Grey’s Anatomy and ER. His debut album includes the songs: “Colors,” “Keep it Loose, Keep it Tight,” and “Seen it All Before.”
The album Supply & Demand
(2006), which had less commercial success, was not received as well as his debut, but in my opinion continued to expose the many layers and musical talent of Amos Lee and his band. Some great examples would be “Freedom,” “Skipping Stone,” and “Sweet Pea.” Lee’s latest album Last Days at The Lodge
released in 2008 has some inspiring tracks and that smooth, soulful sound that I have come to expect. A few of my top choices off this album are “Listen,” “Street Corner Preacher,” and “Ease Back.”
Amos Lee is reportedly working on a fourth album which is expected out this fall. I’m hoping to hear some of his new work at this year’s ACL show. Amos Lee will be performing at 6pm on Friday at the Austin Ventures stage, hope to see you there!
